An interesting mix of WWII technology and the workhorse of the Vietnam war is featured today… making us think that the client has a family connection to both perhaps.  This black and gray piece was completed by artist Mez at Total Eclipse Tattoo in Fort Collins, CO.

We’ve got a few B-17 Flying Fortress tattoos to showcase in the coming few days starting with this great ribpiece by Mike Devries of Mike Devries Tattoos in Encino, CA.

The piece is still in progress, awaiting one more run through and background, but it still looks great and the placement is very unique and works well for the massive bomber.

Contrary to what you may read on the web, we have proof of a tattooed airline pilot!  They do exist!

We received this fantastic photo from a captain flying a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 in the UK last week. Originally tattooed as two outlined stars, he had the airplane symbol added just after Christmas as a reminder of his childhood, counting the airport signs on the way to the airport for holiday.

He mentioned that the tattoo is usually covered by his watch, allowing it to be hidden when on the job.

Harkening back to the early days of aviation, many designs and experiments in soaring or gliding took place. This upper back piece shows an old illustration of one of those designs in fine line black and grey.

Here’s one you don’t see everyday… a B-26 Marauder. This nearly photorealistic black and grey tattoo was completed by artist Pows One at Starlight Tattoo in New Jersey. I was even amazed with this one!

I came across this photo as I was surfing around the web and thought it was a great example of a different sort of aviation tattoo.  Pictured here is Freddie Laker, son of Sir Freddie Laker, British airline entrepreneur. The tattoo is the logo of his fathers airline, Laker Airways. The photo comes from the Flickr stream of Flywithjoe.com and the Fly With Me Podcast Episode 15.

For those of you who don’t know of Sir Freddie Laker, he was a real revolutionary back in the 70s and 80s as the founder of the first real budget airline, Laker Airways.

It reminds me of the commitment and brand loyalty that some in the airline industry feel for their employer… surely there must be an airline employee out there that has a permanent tribute to their ‘line… Southwest Airlines perhaps?
