Sprayer Salute: Crop Duster Tattoo Tribute

Posted on September 9, 2008

crop duster air tractor at-400 agriculture sprayer airplane pilot memorial tattoos in flight manakin tattoo studio Certainly a unique tattoo flying at us today!  Pictured here is a colorful half sleeve highlighting the job of the crop duster — one of the riskier flying jobs out there, but a necessity in agriculture. The particular aircraft featured here is an Air Tractor AT-400.  The tattoo is presumably in honor of a loved one who was a crop dusting pilot.

The tattoo comes our way from Manakin Tattoo Studio, Pismo Beach, CA.

Messerschmitt Bf-109 WWII Airplane Tattoo Fighter Tattoos In Flight Tim DunneA little change of scenery for a Monday morning — a tattoo of a dogfight involving the feared Messerschmitt BF-109 and a group of Supermarine Spitfires.  The scene, perhaps taken right from the Battle of Britain, was tattooed by Tim Dunne of Trader Tim’s Tattoo in Alderley, Brisbane Australia.

Atomic Robo Red 5 Comic Comics Tattoos In Flight

A little bit of a change today — and only slightly off topic, but cool nonetheless.  This is a tattoo of Atomic Robo, the main character of a great new comic series from Red 5 Comics (I say new, but it’s been out for a year, so not really).  He’s a bad-guy fighting, wisecracking robot who has been seen behind the stick of a few WWII planes in the series… so if you don’t know of Robo, take a look at their site here.

Friend and fellow college alum Scott Wegener does the art and inking for the comic and is damn cool mofo in my book.  He was a flight instructor for quite some time before making the switch to art — and based on his success and talent, he made the right choice!

So that’s what keeps us on topic right?

The tattoo below — perhaps the first Atomic Robo tattoo — was created by Stretch at Stretch Tattoos in East Hartford, CT.

And yes, I am a fan of the series as well, wearing my Atomic Robo t-shirt and staring at the five first run issue number ones on my shelf!

Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Airplane Tattoo Bomber Tattoos In Flight Steve Tiberi

Just a small Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress for Saturday.  If you know your B-17’s, you’ll recognize it as the “Nine O Nine” currently flown around the United States by the Collings Foundation as part of the Wings of Freedom Tour with a Consolidated B-24 Liberator and a North American B-25 Mitchell.

This tattoo, done on a narrow forearm, was expertly executed by Steve Tiberi of Olde City Tattoo of Philadelphia, PA.

Here’s a New One: Paper Airplane Tattoo

Posted on September 4, 2008

Paper Airplane Tattoo Tattoos In Flight Jason Sweet Freaks and Geeks TattooWe all remember our dreams of flight as a kid, when we took the sheet of lined filler paper and made our first attempt at a paper airplane with it.  Unfortunately many of us failed to take into account such concepts as center of gravity and the fast that there were two huge holes in the wing for the binder rings!

Artist Jason Sweet of Freaks and Geeks Tattoo Studio of Fullerton, CA playfully placed a permanent picture of a paper plane on a passionate person — how’s that for alliteration!

Mustang on Skin: Black and Gray P-51 Tattoo

Posted on September 3, 2008

North American P-51 Mustang WWII Fighter Plane Pilot Aviator Tattoos In Flight Aviation Sage O'Connell Urban ArtSome might call them the “Cessna” of the modern warbird community, but the P-51 Mustang still holds a special place in many peoples hearts.  From the WWII veteran that saw the “Little Friend” protecting him just outside his gun position on a B-17 to the wide eyed kid who built plastic models of the “Cadillac of the Sky” — the P-51 will always be one of the most beloved warbirds out there.

In tribute to the P-51, artist Sage O’Connell from Urban Art Tattoo in Mesa, AZ (right around the corner from us!) tattooed this beautiful representation in black and gray on a passionate P-51 enthusiast!
